MIKE KENNEDY AND ED WALSH.  Kennedy, 33, a six-year veteran of the department, was single and a Marine veteran. He lived in Hyde Park. He was assigned to Ladder 15 but happened to be working oN Engine 33 on Wednesday, MacDonald said.
Kennedy was a Marine, with all the traits that implied – aggressiveness, strength and toughness. “Those are the guys you want in fire service. Marines are head first,” Cheatham said.
Kennedy coached at Crossfit, and Mullane described him as a “machine” when it came to working out.
Kennedy worked the Boston Marathon bombing. This year, he was one of at least 50 area firefighters who planned to run the Marathon. The group, led by Incident Commander Deputy Fire Chief Joseph Finn, would go out every Sunday and run 20 miles.
Kennedy also volunteered for the Boston Firefighters Burn Foundation. On Tuesday, he helped host an appreciation night for Boston’s medical personnel. “He was there welcoming the doctors and therapists, making them all feel welcome,” Costin said.
As part of a national burn conference in Boston this week, Kennedy, part of a hospitality group, took out-of-town firefighters to enjoy Boston.
“He’s a young, single guy, good looking, volunteering to do stuff like that, so that gives you an insight into his personality,” MacDonald said.
Firefighter Dennis Keith said Kennedy was also an ex-chef. “Whatever you put on the table, he can prepare it,” Keith said. “We couldn’t wait for his night to cook, because we know we’re going to get a real good meal.”
Colleagues said Kennedy had an engaging personality. “He lit up a room,” Costin said. “He’d come in, he’d smile.”
Paris called Kennedy “an entertainer. … He’s a type of kid, you know how when someone walks into a room, he puts a smile on your face, because he’s a funny kid.”
But Paris said Kennedy also had a serious side. He was a “Big Brother” mentor to a boy for six years. He helped a kid overcome alcoholism and get into shape through Crossfit. “He’s a character,” Paris said.
